ABDM (Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission)
Also: ABDM, ABHA integration
What is ABDM (Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission)?
ABDM is India's national digital health framework, providing health IDs (ABHA), registries for facilities and professionals, and consent-based health-record exchange that hospitals and health-tech products integrate with.
What ABDM (Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission) means
The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission establishes the building blocks for a connected health system in India: the ABHA health account that identifies a patient, registries of health facilities and professionals, and a Health Information Exchange in which records move only with the patient's consent. Providers and software vendors integrate through defined roles such as Health Information Provider and Health Information User, and through sandbox certification.
For hospitals and health-tech products, integration means linking patient records to ABHA numbers, publishing records such as prescriptions and discharge summaries in the prescribed FHIR-based formats, requesting and honouring consent artefacts, and keeping an audit of every exchange. Scan-and-share registration at OPD counters is a common first step.
ABDM is not a central database of everyone's health records; records stay with the provider and move under consent. And it is not a compliance certificate that ends the work: it defines interoperability, while DPDP and sector rules govern how data is handled in your own systems.
Who it really matters to
- Operations head: ABHA-based registration shortens OPD queues and reduces duplicate patient records across facilities.
- Compliance officer: consent-based exchange and audit trails are required, and they align with DPDP obligations on patient data.
- CTO / Head of Engineering: integration touches the HIS, identity matching and FHIR record generation, and must pass sandbox certification.
- Founder / CEO: for health-tech products, ABDM integration is increasingly expected by hospital customers and public programmes.
Why it exists
Patient records in India have been fragmented across providers, on paper and in incompatible systems, so every visit starts from scratch and patients carry files. ABDM exists to give patients a durable identity and control over how their records move between providers. For builders, it replaces ad hoc integrations with a common framework. The trade-off is engineering and process work: identity linking, FHIR record generation, consent handling and certification all take time, and the framework continues to evolve. Doing it well also requires the hospital's own data to be clean enough to link reliably.
Where it is applied
- A hospital network enabling scan-and-share OPD registration linked to ABHA across all its facilities.
- A telehealth platform publishing e-prescriptions and consultation records to patients' linked health accounts under consent.
- A diagnostic chain sharing lab reports through the health information exchange rather than WhatsApp PDFs.
- A clinical AI assistant that pulls a patient's prior records with consent to inform a summary for the treating doctor.
- A health-insurance workflow using ABDM-linked records to speed up claims with patient consent.

Frequently asked questions
Is ABDM integration mandatory for private hospitals?
Participation has been driven by incentives, public programmes and customer expectation rather than a blanket mandate. Check current requirements for your context; many hospitals adopt it because ABHA registration and record exchange improve their own operations.
How does consent work in ABDM?
A patient grants consent for a specific purpose, data type and period through their ABHA-linked app. Providers request and honour that consent artefact, and every exchange is logged. Records do not move without it.
