Adaptive learning

Adaptive learning systems estimate what each learner knows and choose the next activity accordingly. A learner who answers fraction questions correctly moves on; one who struggles gets a worked example, a simpler variant or a different explanation. The system models mastery per skill, sequences content along prerequisite paths and adapts difficulty and pacing. Modern implementations add LLM-based tutors that explain, question and give feedback, grounded in the institution's curriculum through retrieval so they do not drift off syllabus.

It depends on an event pipeline capturing attempts, time on task and hints used, a curriculum mapped to skills and prerequisites, and evaluation showing that the adaptation improves outcomes rather than just engagement. Teacher dashboards that show where a class is stuck are usually the most valued output.

It is not a recommendation engine for videos, and it is not an unconstrained chatbot. Adaptation needs a skill model, and a tutor needs grounding and review of its content.
